Επιστήμονες και ερευνητές από τη Χιλή ανακάλυψαν, μέσω του τηλεσκοπίου Eso 3.6m, πλανήτη έξω από το ηλιακό μας σύστημα, ο οποίος ενδεχομένως μπορεί να φιλοξενεί εξωγήινη δραστηριότητα.
Με την θερμοκρασία στην επιφάνεια του να κυμαίνεται από 0 έως 40 βαθμούς Κελσίου, το νερό παραμένει στην υγρή του μορφή, βασική προϋπόθεση για την ύπαρξη ζωής.
Η ακτίνα του νέου πλανήτη - 1,5 φορά μεγαλύτερη της γης - φανερώνει πως η επιφάνεια του είναι είτε βραχώδης είτε καλυμμένη με ωκεανούς.
Ο εν λόγω πλανήτης εκτελεί τροχιά γύρω από τον αστέρα «Gliese 581», στον οποίο και βρίσκεται 14 φορές πιο κοντά απ' ότι βρίσκεται η Γη στον ήλιο, ενώ για μία πλήρη περιστροφή χρειάζεται 13 ημέρες.
Η «υπέρ-γη», όπως την αποκαλούν, εικάζεται ότι θα προσελκύσει το ενδιαφέρον πολλών διαστημικών αποστολών, με αιχμή την αναζήτηση ύπαρξης εξωγήινης ζωής, αφού είναι η πρώτη φορά στα διαστημικά χρονικά που ανακαλύπτεται πλανήτης δυνητικά κατοικήσιμος.
